"Josh loved family so much, that he got a tattoo about it"
"Which is odd because he hated needles"
Joshua put his family at the center of his life. Everything he did was for their benefit, when helped build the USNA rifle team during his Junior year, and later took the reigns as Captain during his first-class year, he fundamentally changed the program for the better. His leadership style and personal ethos were one and the same. This exemplary leadership only speaks to the quality of character that Joshua Watson possessed.
What we can take from Joshua is to live our lives true to our own ethics, and become the leaders that wish we had for ourselves. Joshua stood for his family because it was central to his leadership, and poured his life into programs ultimately turning them into something deeper. He had so much love for the people he worked with, learned with, and trained with. Many say that they were not surprised that it was him, who fought through the wounds to get help, not thinking for himself, but for those around him.
Watson's lessons
Be confident in what you know is right
Stand for yourself, and don't back down. When you know you are right, don't be discouraged.
Live proudly in the service you give to those around you. Protect them, and love them with all you have.
Don't hold back the in things you truly love, embrace your goals and pursue them. Leave nothing undone.
