Ensign Joshua Watson class of 2019 and Naval Aviator. On December 6th 2019, while stationed at Pensacola Naval Base, Ensign Watson “showed exceptional heroism and bravery in the face of evil” as he confronted, and escaped from an active shooter which was trying to claim the lives of his fellow sailors. Although wounded, Ensign Watson was able to escape and find help and gave authorities the description of the shooter. That day he “saved countless lives with his own”.

Ensign Watson will be remembered for his heroic actions, but also his legacy. Before the Academy he held impeccable character and showed early signs of an amazing leader. During his years at the Academy Watson again proved himself an impeccable leader, and role model through countless accomplishments.

Prosapia is the Latin word for family. Ensign Watson lived by and for the families that he was apart of. Either here on the yard, or back in Alabama, Watson was remembered for creating tight bonds with people on the yard. He was close with multiple groups, but his closest families were the one he created. The Academy’s rifle team is where his focused landed as he took the group to unseen levels of competition. Graduating as the senior of the team and leaving behind a legacy. Watson’s actions with his team can be seen as a landmark of leadership, and service.

Servo

Servo is the Latin translation of save, protect, or keep. Watson truly defined his life through servo. From the actions of servitude as a young man, to his final moments as he saved countless lives of his fellow sailors and friends. Ensign Watson, is known for the combination of these two Latin roots, because he lived them every day, and defined his life by them. “Keeping the Family” is what he lived by, and what we can remember him for.
